It's fine to go to a range to shoot a few rounds for fun with this type of "training", but carrying one around for defense is a whole different matter. It is a weighty responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Without proper training, like it or not, you are a bigger threat to the safety of yourself and others than any potential criminal is. Let me tell you from experience, I have seen some scary things from people that came to me for training and opened with the words, "I have been carrying concealed for a few years, but thought I would go ahead and get some instruction..."
The first thing to consider is the legality of open carry. Depending on where you live, this may or may not be a legal practice. For more information on this, please refer to my book Multi-State CCW: Concealed Carry Handbook available on Amazon and Kindle.
Next, what is the purpose of open carry? The theory behind open carry is that you are demonstrating to society that you are not one to be targeted as a victim. You have a firearm, and by displaying it, you are letting the world know that you are willing to use it. But this is a double-edged sword!
If I am Joe Criminal walking down the street, I'm probably not looking at you as the person I want to try to steal a wallet from if you are open carrying. I would much rather find somebody that looks like an easy target. BUT... let's say I'm Joe "Bank" Robber and I'm preparing to pull off a major heist, but I see you there with your open carry firearm. Do you think that I have just had a change of heart and decided that this whole planned out robbery is a bad idea and I now see the light? Or do you think I just found the potential threat to my well prepared plan? What better way to get this party started than to show I mean business by taking out the guy carrying a firearm on his hip? Now that I have your attention Judy Teller.... please fill this bag with the money, so that I don't have to shoot you as well. Thank you.
Carrying for all to see is kind of like the bullies from elementary school. They looked tough and menacing. To be sure, some of them truly were. But there were also quite a few that only looked that way until the first time they got punched in the nose and saw their own blood. But remember that quiet kid that never said anything? When he got picked on, he unleashed the fury of middle earth as everybody watched with a new found respect.
Remember.... The strong move quiet!
